Hubby brag..
I'm going to brag on my hubby now.
He finally had some time to get to the smaller 'honey do' list.
We broke down and bought a new microwave the other day. We don't really have a specific place to put one. I suggested over the stove but he didn't like that idea..and I'm not sure it's 'to code' anyway.
I certainly can't have it taking up counter space in my kitchen, either. I need that space to prepare meals.
He suggested in the cupboard by our fridge. I didn't think it would fit. He insisted that it would. (I still didn't think it would!)
Guess who was wrong??
Boy I love being wrong.. :o)

Where did October go??
Mikey had his vision appointment and his sight is fine. Caleb had a check up and is 19 1/2 lbs. Roly poly. :o)
The past month has had me preparing for winter..and preparing for Christmas. We managed to finish the children's Christmas shopping already with some money we had set aside. Also stocking up on what I'll need in December for baking, like butter on sale at our local Kwik Trip. I bought Christmas cards already and will be ordering some prints of pictures soon.
I've been trying to reevaluate our finances and my 'frugal attempts.' Raising 7 children on one income isn't the easiest.. but the Lord always provides, doesn't He? He always has for us. I have a budget and if I stick with it everything usually comes out fine. It's actually kind of fun to see how far I can stretch the budget. Following a menu plan helps. I have a two week menu for supper, breakfast and lunches.
Sometimes when I look at our budget it seems impossible...but we ALWAYS end up with more than enough! :o) My 'grocery' budget is 700 a month. That's roughly 500 for food and 200 for non-food items. I bake alot from scratch and our meals are simple..yet healthy. Things we eat are healthy natural peanutbutter, whole wheat bread, stir fries, and I try to avoid HFCS as much as possible (high fructose corn syrup), and lots of chili in the crockpot. I tried baking with just honey and only using pure maple syrup..but the cost was too much this last month and I went back to using dark brown sugar again. We do get WIC for our younger 3 children, which gives us a few gallons of milk every month, plus some cheese, whole grain tortillas, eggs, peanutbutter and cereal (I always get Cream of Wheat on it). So if you include WIC food I probably spend about 600 a month for food. I felt I should mention that because it does make a difference in my 'budget', of course. Children can qualify for WIC till age 5.
One of our favorite at home, from scratch brekkys (or suppers) is homemade waffles. It takes me about an hour to make them all but we usually end up with leftovers for the next day. I really want to get a second waffle iron so I could cut the preparation time in half!
Each square is 4 waffles..I made about 48 waffles and they lasted two meals.
There were made with part whole wheat, part white flour..no sugar added. We made homemade blueberry syrup to go with them!
Noah tried his hand at baking cookies...all on his own.
He measured, mixed and baked every step by himself. I considered it part of his schooling for the day. :o)
(notice the salt and pepper shakers on the back of my stove? I bought those at a yard sale before we moved to Minnesota. Mom and I went yard sale'ing for the last time before my move and this was what I bought at a white house along Highway 6. They're one of my most favorite possessions. )
Another thing I love to make is homemade granola. It us absolutely the best! The kids like it with milk, but I love to mix mine with plain yogurt and frozen blueberries. Oatmeal is super for nursing mamas, too. :o) My recipe is very simple..
RECIPE~~~1 large container of old fashioned oats. Poured into a large bowl. Pour 1 cup oil over the granola and either 1 cup of honey or 1 cup of brn sugar, lots of cinnamon, 1 cup of sunflower seeds. If you want sweeter granola, add more honey than I mentioned. I mix well, and pour into a large (15 by 10) in baking pan. I bake it on 325 for an hour or so stirring every 10 minutes. I don't let it get too dark or it will burn. The granola will crisp up as it cools. I store it in a large ziplock freezer bag. You can add coconut if you like or other 'goodies'..but I like this basic recipe and it's pretty inexpensive. ~~~~~

It's a BOY by the way..
We are having a BOY according to my ultrasound..way back whenever that was. I'm 30 weeks along already. Pregnancy itself has been going well. I developed asthma problems in the month of January..but have it under control now. Seems to be weather related, maybe.
Our newest little guy is named Caleb John. He's still du e to arrive around the end of April...due exactly one week after Isaac's 11th birthday. He'd be thrilled -really!- if Caleb came on his bday.
We're all snowed-out and ready for spring..even though we haven't taken the boys sledding yet. Perhaps I'll convince daddy to take them this weekend. It's either been too cold..or too 'something' for us to not go.
My next appointment is mar. 1st at 32 weeks. Not sure when I'll have to go back in after that. We're getting anxious to meet this little guy. He's an active one!

Baby news!
We had a pretty mellow summer. Our new (to us) 97 Chevy Express, that we bought in the spring, has been sitting mostly in our driveway. After plugging an additional 1800 dollars into it...we're still trying to narrow down the problem. I think we're getting there..but we're certainly not taking it back to our 'regular' mechanic. I've learned far more than I ever wanted to know about Chevy trucks, thanks to Chilton's...and Google. :P
Since I found out about our newest blessing right when our school started, things have been..a bit slow, in our education department. But now that the 2nd trimester is finally here..I'm feeling better, and I think we're getting back on track. I had originally wanted to end our school year at the end of May, but I'm thinking now w/ baby coming in April..we may school right on into June..to finish up. Next year..I'm seriously considering getting all new curriculum..something easier on me, that will cover all the bases. (Thinking about Christian Light Education, or similar..we'll see)
That's about it for an update now. The kids are all growing like weeds. Ethan is taller than ME now. Ultrasound results coming soon! :o)

Explaining abortion to a six year old...Red Envelopes Day.
How would you explain abortion to a six year old child?

March 31st was "Red Envelope" Day. We participated by preparing our red envelopes to send to President Obama. Xena knows the tragedy of abortion, but JLee did not...it is very difficult to explain to a 6 year old about legalized abortion, everyone who "sits on the fence" should try it sometime, I believe it would radically alter the viewpoint. I wanted to keep the explanation as mild as possible; any attempt to gloss could confuse JLee, and Xena would not let any dishonesty for delicacy sake to occur. As I was pondering my approach, the thought kept popping up, "If I can't explain to a 6 year old then what unbelievable excuse are we telling ourselves?" Abortion is what it is...to abort means to discontinue...in this case, it means the existence of the baby. I know I am "preaching to the choir", however the recent reports show the staggering numbers of abortions in my lifetime have totally flattened me...and these numbers are only for the United States! Could I have made a difference in all those years? Could I have sought the Lord more? Of course, I could have...there can be no other answer; the shame hits me with such a horrid force. But, I do not despair, for I have a Redeemer who forgives the tragedy of my Laodecia sin. Moreover, my renewed hope is this, as long as He tarries...I can be His sword, awake and able to will His will.
There are many things in this world that a 6 year old child need not know about; many things that are considered inappropriate or gruesome and for me abortion is one of them. I was not prepared to tell JLee the "reasons" given for abortion, I was simply going to tell her what it was and why we were sending the envelopes...but this seemed to be so cold. I toyed with the idea of NOT telling her, but I knew Xena would have not liked this idea. I knew there would not be a barrage of questions after my explanation; JLee is simply not like that. Knowing this, it made it worse for me; questions clear the air and set the feet on a straight path…
Here is what I told this little girl and her remarkable reply:
"Doodle, we are mailing these envelopes to President Obama. We are mailing them because he is signing into law that our tax dollars be used for women who do not want to carry their babies anymore. It is called abortion. Some people believe they have a right to keep their babies from growing inside of them and so they abort them. They believe they have good reasons..." I hesitated for a question, but none came...I continued, "Right now, there are laws that restrict abortions and keep our tax dollars from paying for this, President Obama wants to change this and make abortion possible for everyone at anytime, even in other countries. There are people mailing these envelopes from all over the country and we hope that President Obama will listen and understand how many people do not want him to promote abortion".
JLee was quiet for a long moment, as she pondered I watched a very sad realization come upon her face, very quietly she asked me, "Grammie, why would a Mommy want to kill her baby?"
My heart sank, I had been careful not to use the word kill, although this is what happens to the child; to deny it would be insane and “culturally accepted” explanations absurd given the astute clarity of her question. Truth was what she wanted, “JLee, I just don’t know...except for the fact that we are all sinners...can you see my little Doobug, why we so desperately need a Savior?” Her little lip trembled, and I hugged her, "The babies that have been aborted are safe in the arms of Jesus...no worries there...but the Mommies' need our prayers. They have to live with a very bad choice and they need to know about the saving Grace and Forgiveness of our Lord."
We prayed and I could tell she took a great comfort in knowing the babies were now safe with the Lord and their mothers given to Jesus.
I wish President Obama could have looked into the face of JLee as she asked that question...to feel the crush of its weight...

Day trip to Lake Pepin, Mississippi River
